Get there early in the morning because THEY WILL SELL OUT. Do yourself a favor and get a Skizzle. It's a Norwegian scone and they are amazing. The skizzles are the shizzle!

Holy Donuts! I think I found my new church! Donuts don't get any better than this. Truly! Don't overlook the raspberry filled jelly and banana cream filled donuts. So, maybe I spent a little more time there than most people do, but I really love donuts. [apologies to my wife] In the time I spent there, they just kept bringing out fresh trays of donuts! It was frickin' 3:30 in the afternoon! We didn't eat a single donut that wasn't still warm. I would like to say there's a possibility of debating if these are the World's Best Donuts. I really would. I CAN'T! I pledge my loyalty. 5 1/2 hours from home; I would road trip to Grand Marais just for the World's Best Donuts. Holy Donuts! I love you!

Why are you even reading this review?!? Doesn't the name tell you all you need to know?! Trust me - the name does not lie - TRULY the WORLD'S best donuts. I know everyone has a pref of cake or raised, but let me tell you - you MUST MUST MUST try a cake cinnamon sugar donut and tell me that you're not impressed? Actually, all their cake donuts are amazing. I usually prefer raise glazed, but WBD is the only place I opt for a cake donut. If you're in GM often, write you're name on the board and remember your number for the following summer - you can get a free donut if you tell them your number from the year before! Enjoy!

I would typically never go to a place that's proclaimed as "worlds best" anything, however this is an awesome establishment, with killer doughnuts. If there is a line, just relax and enjoy the view-It's worth the wait.

Worlds best doughnuts... What else do you need to know? First timers go with their classics. The dough is not raised as much and they offer glazed, frosted, cinnamon or sugar. Otherwise I love the Tubby Twist. Best part about this place is the doughnuts, next best part is the price. They give these little rings of mouthwatering perfection away for next to nothing. I can't help but to buy a dozen every time I stop in. Keep in mind they are only worlds best while they're fresh. Be sure to get their early because they stay open only as long as they still have doughnuts left to sell. Early bird gets the doughnut.

Woooo donuts are the best! Better than your average donut shop. The name may be a little hyperbolic, but I would say that their skizzle (in the same family as an elephant ear or fry bread) was the best I've ever had. All of their donuts were top-notch and I'm pretty sure you can't go wrong with any choice here.

Definitely the best donuts North of Minneapolis! LOVE!!!! A Bakers Wife in Minneapolis is equally as amazing, also cash only.

These are truly the world's best donuts. I do not eat donuts unless I am in Grand Marais because I don't usually like them enough to consider them to be "worth the calories". These are worth every one. If you are a first-timer, stick to the cake donuts. My favorite is the sugar cake donut. If you know what you want ahead of time, you can skip the long line coming out the door and order from the side window. And with so many great trails in the area, you can hike/bike/run those calories off in no time.

Right. They're "a-o.k.", but they're not the "World's Best" donuts. The best I've tasted thus far in life are those of "A Baker's Wife" in Minneapolis. World's Best Donuts are crunchy on the outside, which is very enjoyable. But they're also v e r y greasy. And, they don't have that light nutmeg (mace) flavor of standard fry cakes that I like so much. On a recent Saturday afternoon, the lady behind the counter window announced that they only had plain or sugared donuts left - she could, if we wanted, make cinnamon-sugared ones. I'd pass on this one in the future. I'd much rather get my fill of great donuts at A Baker's Wife.

Cinnamon sugar donuts!! So so good! Had a line outside for the locals or people who know what they want, helped expedite the crowds on a busy weekend. Coffee was good too. Long line but worth it.

You really can't go wrong with anything here. It's not called World's Best Donuts for nothing. I am a HUGE fan of completely plain cake donuts and these are by far the BEST I've ever had. I got my parents the maple Long John's and now I think they love me even more. My two year old loved the Tubby Twist, which is basically just a twisty glazed donut. Milk in the carton's is a great dose of Nostalgia for city slickers, like us! If you don't at least try a donut here you'll feel very very regretful.

Don't let the bold claim scare you off. They can back it up! Great doughnuts, but get there early for the best selection. Dress warm on those cool fall mornings, because there may be a line out the door. Worth the wait though!!

On our way out of town to head back on the long drive back to MPLS, we had to try out these donuts. This was the one other place everyone told us to go to in Grand Marais. These guys don't mess around. They wear their title well! My partner got the banana cream bismark with chocolate frosting. I went for a simple cinnamon cake donut. I got one taste of his banana cream... How did they do that?!?!?! The banana flavor is bouncing off the walls in this soft doughy goodness! I was blown away. My cake donut was THE BEST DONUT I'VE EVER EATEN. That texture is unbeatable. Crisp and so so soft inside. This really makes the donut. I wish they shipped donuts to my house.

Here is a picture of my brother and I eating skizzles in 1997. Traveling up to Grand Marais for vacation tomorrow and already looking forward to my favorite donut shop! There is a reason this place has been in business for so many years: it's that good! Stop by if you are making the trek up to Canada, are about to enter the BWCAW, or simply staying put in Grand Marais.

The name says it all. A bit on the sugary side but then what donut isn't? You've gotta try it if you're in Grand Marais.

Delicious little treats. Plain cake with chocolate frosting were amazing. A darn good cup of Joe too was served. A great little spot for sure.

  • Jim R.

Wow. They really are good. Crispy on the outside, cakey and tender on the inside. The chocolate coating is first rate and sitting down inside the place with family, I was struck by its charming, hokey-doke atmosphere. The kids were immediately won over. Only downside (for me) was the wholly authentic, traditional Minnesota coffee. A sign inside the seating area sums it up: "Don't criticize the coffee. You may be old and weak yourself someday." Well, with the turnover in this place, it wasn't old, but weak? Definitely. My Minnesota-born spouse said it was working for her. So when in Grand Marais, do as the Grand Maratians do.

We read about this place while planning our voyage to the North Shore last fall and expected to be absolutely "blown away" with the donuts. So, the night after visiting nearby Sven & Ole's we made our way down the block from our hotel room to the famous World's Best Donuts (10 E Wisconsin St, Grand Marais) expecting great things. Well, I'll say this. The donuts are good, but the "world's best?" I don't think so. The place is delightfully tacky as you might expect for a tourist town. It was reminiscent of the other places we had visited along the North Shore during our trip. Loads of photographs on the walls and absolutely nothing fancy here. They definitely don't put on airs. The employees are friendly, the coffee is strong (and good) and it's hard to beat a location right next to Lake Superior. The donuts are good. I don't remember what we had exactly (2-3 each and that'll fill you up quite nicely for the morning) but I remember having one of there lemon "roly poly" rolls. I really liked that. Krystyn had what she called a "skittle" which is basically a homemade version of an elephant's ear/cruller (that's what we call them down in Iowa... I don't know what folks up this way call them). The rolls were good, but I'm not sure "world's best" is fitting because I've definitely had better. Overall, this is a great place to experience. It's not fancy, the people working there are super friendly and the donuts are good. Nothing too overpriced and it's hard to beat a cup of their coffee first thing in the morning while watching the sun come up over Lake Superior. World's Best Donuts is something to experience at least once, that's for sure.

Are they the world's beest donuts? The jury is still out. Afterall I haven't visited all of the donut shops int he world...yet! They had a wide variety to choose from. All were delicious and fresh. Even the day old donuts were awesome, I have to admit. Although, there seemed to be something missing. Something small and round and sugary. Ah yes, where were the minidonuts? If they had them we couldn't find them. It seems like any world famous donut shop would have minidonuts. I guess they may not be the worlds best afterall, but they have some mighty fine donuts!

These really were the best. We tried a huge variety of doughnuts and pastries while we were on vacation in Grand Marais last month. Everything was delicious!

  • Aaron H.

The simple donut is always the best donut...the glazed! Big, light, fluffy, just the right amount of sweet glaze. The sign says it all...the best!

  • Rod S.

Very good and soft. I am more of a crisp exterior guy but they were very good. Our hotel also had them for the breakfast buffet so got even mote without even trying.

If I were a doughnut, I'd want to be a Worlds Best Donut (WBD)! If I were Oprah, I'd have a giant assortment of Worlds Best Donuts delivered to me on a weekly basis. If I could create my own perfume, It would smell like the Worlds Best Donuts shop! No exaggeration, Worlds Best Donuts (WBD), truly makes the Universe's best donuts! There is literally not a bad thing on the menu, and this is coming from someone who typically can't stand anything filled with jam or custards. This is one place you absolutely, positively have to stop at; even if you are just driving through town. The Break-Down: Pure Deliciousness: WBD somehow manages to make a beyond delicious doughnut with the perfect ratio of dough, filling and toppings.I've been going here since I was a toddler and the donughts are consistently amazing and never ever dry! My favorite is the Skizzle. The Skizzle is a deep fried doughy Frisbee covered in sugar. It's impossible to not eat one of these bad boys and not get sugar all over your fingers, just like its impossible to eat a bag of Cheetos without getting orange dust all over your fingers! I also suggest trying any version of a Chet's Best. Cheap:The whole family can eat here for under $10 (including a drink). Plus, everyone will leave happy, satisfied, full of sugar and wanting more! Super craveable! -Owned by an amazingly kind and generous family who takes prides in their Doughnuts and in their town. -The only thing I dislike about WBD is that they're a seasonal business. Typically open from late May - late October. However, I'm not in town year round so I really can't complain! Fact: I have never had a bad experience at WBD and I don't now anybody that ever has! To me that says A LOT about how epically amazing the doughnuts are and how phenomenal the customer service is! I guarantee that you will not be disappointed!

"World's Best Donuts," I hear you scoffing, "in some tiny town in Minnesota? Psh. PSH." Friends, I am here to tell you they ain't lying. I have never in my entire life had sweet, simple donuts as good as the ones I ate here. I don't even *like* cake donuts and I had to be bullied into ordering their glazed variety by my mother-in-law. Well. I found myself scarfing one down and looking covetously at my husband's. They're not super-fancy but they are super-delicious, which is way more important. We ate these donuts every single day of our stay and, even on our last day, the first peep out of my mouth was a hopeful "Skizzle? Is there a skizzle?" What's a skizzle? It's a sweet doughy thing coated in delicious sugar and possibly magic. It's really good. It reminds me of a carnival treat, only it's just BREAKFAST. And, as if the donuts aren't enough, the coffee's not bad, either. If you find yourself in the neighborhood, eat these donuts. Eat a couple of them. You won't regret it.

You only need to know that the name is accurate. Fresh, there is no better donut on earth.

I ate a donut here once, and it did indeed taste like it could be the worlds best donut. I still feel like I need to eat a few more donuts in my life before I can officially say it was the worlds best.

Passing through Grand Marais for lunch on the way to Ontario, we just happened to park our car in front of World's Best Donuts. Given the name and my proclivity for sweet cake-y things - I couldn't pass up the opportunity. I got a chocolate glazed cake donut for the road. It was moist, fluffy, light, just the right size and worthy of the name definitely better than Dunkin Donut's or Tim Hortons. Arguably better than the local bespoke donut shops in NYC (ie Doughnut Plant/Peter Pan) and certainly cheaper than all these options at 65/75 cents per donut depending on the type. I thought about this donut during my entire fishing trip. On the way back, we stopped again for lunch in Grand Marais and I got a custard filled bismark. Pretty good, but it didn't satiate me so I got another one of those delicious chocolate glazed and washed it down with a half pint of cold milk. The perfect combination. Not knowing when I'd ever come back through this little town again, I took a dozen to go. They only lasted two days! If you're driving through, don't miss it!

I think I've had better doughnuts, for my taste, but the name likely rings true for a large radius on the north shore. I would call this place more of a 'traditional' doughnut stop. Don't come in here hoping to get crazy concoctions with lots of sprinkles. It's more like... glazed, cinnamon sugar, filled creme, etc. The wildest it got was a banana filled one. Also, no need to ask 'what's your bold coffee today'. (Apparently Bill forgot we were in a town of less than 1,400 people and thought we were at a Starbucks.)

Yummy! We actually ended up going twice in one day they were so good. Once in the morning after leaving our hotel and then again later in the day after returning from driving the Gunflint Trail. Its one of those local places you just have to stop in. The tables/eating area is filled with pictures of people from all over the world holding their World's Best coffee mugs.

I could go into great detail about this place, but the name says it best; the world's best doughnuts are found here. 'Nuff said!

  • TomNTammy S.

They really are the worlds best donuts! They hold true to their name. One day in Grand Marias I think all I ate was donuts and I crave them all the time, now if they could just master the cronut. Can't wait to go back!

The name says it all, truly the worlds best! Don't miss out these delicious treats if you're in Grand Marais!

I really can't say anything that hasn't already been said by others! The sign on the door says "cash or check only"; luckily, they're located right across the street from a bank with an ATM. The place is pretty much legendary and-- I would say-- for good reason. They do a brisk business in donuts and when they run out, they're done for they day. I'm a fan of the old-fashioneds, glazed and chocolate-dipped. I also tried a banana-cream-filled donut-- quite good. The only thing I want to try at some point before our week-long vacation is over is maybe a mini-bismarck-- they have either lemon or blueberry filling, and both sound really good to me. I did buy a coffee cup but I confess I've not had coffee here-- I walk down the street to Java Moose.

Great cake donuts. Bought four, had two right away and two the next day. They held up very well. Nice and moist inside. Plus, they're cheap. Yum.

  • Ellie G.

Hands down the best donuts! Go there every time we visit. There just aren't words to describe....went when I was pregnant they went put of their way to make a donut they'd run out of.

  • Kim R.

These really might be the world's best donuts. I'd never really been a fan of cake donuts before I tried the chocolate glazed cake donut from World's Best Donuts. Cake donuts can often be dry and unappealing, but not these donuts. They are always moist and tender, but never greasy. And there is just something about this chocolate glaze that is better than most. It tastes like real melted chocolate, and isn't waxy or artificial tasting. If you're in Grand Marias, this is a place you have to stop! Come in the morning and expect a short line. I've also tried the jelly donut and skizzle, which are both tasty. But you really have to try their chocolate glazed cake donut.

  • M G.

You will not find a better donut. If you are going to Grand Marais you have to stop in. Could be one of the coolest little donut shops in America. BTW, they close in early October for the winter so plan accordingly.
